Cleanse & Nourish So Your Body Can Heal
I don't know nothin 'bout birthin no babies!!!

I like to write about my personal experiences and it is true that I don't know anything about birthing babies, because I have never gone through it before. I am a mother of two adopted children, and adoption is a wonderful way to receive children. I don't feel that I love my children any differently than I would had I given birth to them. On February 20th, 2006 I was able to experience the miracle of birth for the first time when my daughter, Valerie gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

When I first found out Valerie was pregnant I wasn't too sure that she would go the herbal way, because growing up she wasn't very open to taking the herbs. To my great surprise and relief she was very willing to follow a good part of the program that is suggested by Sandra Ellis in her book Dr. Mom's Healthy Living. Here is what she suggests:

Vitalerbs - 5 caps 3 times daily - essential plant based vitamins

Wheat Germ Oil - 2 caps 2 times daily - high in vitamin E, keeps the hormones balanced, keeps the skin soft and pliable for birth.

Liquid Chlorophyl or Jurassic Green - 2 tbsp. 2 times daily - builds healthy blood.

Red Raspberry Leaf tea - 1 quart a day - nutrition for mother & baby.

Pure water, preferably distilled - 2 quarts a day

Organa Minerals - 1 cap full/day - plant based minerals

Dietary Suggestions:

Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Nuts, Seeds, Legumes - organic if possibly - try to make 50% of the diet raw.

Things to Avoid:

No Alcohol, drugs or cigarettes, no carbonated drinks, no red meat, avoid sugar, dairy and processed foods.

Valerie didn't do all of the supplements, but to make things easier and because she wasn't getting the tea in I made a Red Raspberry syrup and suggested 1 tbsp. three times a day.

Sandra Ellis also suggests walking at least a mile a day and breathing deeply, which was easy for Valerie to do since she is a college student.

Dr. Christopher developed a wonderful six weeks before birth herbal formula called PreNatal Formula. I have to tell you that we sell a lot of PreNatal Formula at Herbs First, and I was quite happy when Valerie agreed to take it. The instructions for taking it are 1 capsule per day of the first week, 2 capsules per day the second week and 2 capsules three times a day from the third week on. 6 capsules a day is the maximum dosage suggested. PreNatal Formula is an aid in giving elasticity to the pelvic and vaginal area and strengthening the reproductive organs for easier delivery.

Valerie was hoping to have the baby a week early, we actually went down to her place (she lives 3 hours away) in hopes that giving her some additional herbs would help things along. She was dilated to a 1 at that point, but if the body isn't ready the herbs will not work, and they didn't. She took the Nerve Formula recommended in the Dr. Mom book, Nerve Formula contains Blue Cohosh which helps to stimulate contractions & Black Cohosh which makes contractions more effective. As the next weekend approached she was quite distressed that things weren't happening, at her midwife appointment she was dilated to a two. The midwife separated her membranes in hopes that doing so would get things moving.

Valerie felt nothing by Friday, so at noon I suggested a chiropractic appointment or a massage. She was able to get a massage appointment for Saturday, and the therapist was able to work on quite a few pressure points that will help get things going. She started contracting at about midnight that night but they weren't consistent. By noon on Sunday the 19th, her due date, the contractions started coming every 5 - 7 minutes, so by 2:45 she called us to let us know it was time to come. We got there by 6:00 that night and started her on the Nerve Formula since she had run out of it earlier in the week. Things didn't work out with the father of the baby, so Valerie has chosen to place her baby for adoption. At 7:30 that night the adoptive parents arrived at Valerie's apartment and off we all went to the hotel to wait things out until it was time to go to the hospital. We all played Settlers of Catan & Racko, walked up and down stairs and corridors, and at 2:00 a.m. Valerie felt it was time to head for the hospital. She was checked by an OB nurse and was at a four at 2:30 a.m. The guys napped out on the recliner chairs while Valerie, Jen (adoptive mother) & I walked the corridors. By 5:00 a.m. contractions were getting pretty painful (dilated to a five), so Valerie hopped into the Jacuzzi tub. I came in about 6:15 to massage her back and at 6:45 suggested that we had better see where she was dialated. She was at a 9 - time to call the midwife. The midwife (Laurie) arrived shortly after 7:00 a.m. and thanked Valerie for letting her get a good nights sleep. She predicted that the baby would be born between 8:30 and 9:00 - she was wrong. Valerie proceeded quickly and little Ian was born at 7:56 - wow those herbs worked great! Valerie was so amazing, no drugs all natural childbirth. Laurie said this was the best birth she had attended in a long time, just like the at home births of times gone by. Jen and I both agreed that we couldn't have done it, that Valerie is the most amazing woman we have ever known. Perfect little Ian weighed in at 7 lbs. 5.3 oz., the most beautiful baby boy, of course I am biased! We brought Valerie and Ian home and spent a few wonderful days with him until he was placed with his new parents. Ian came home with a little runny/stuffy nose from the hospital, so we gave him the Kid-e-Well, he thought it was quite tasty and the cold was cleared up in a day.

Although this has been quite a happy/sad experience for our family to see the spiritual/emotional growth in Valerie is quite priceless. She knows that she has done the best thing for her son, to provide him with two loving parents. She looks forward to the time when the right man comes along, we know our list is quite long. She swears by the herbs that she took to help her through this process and after hearing lots of horror stories over the past months knows that she did it the right way!
